Auto Electrical System: Signs of Potential Alternator Failure

The alternator is essentially an electrical generator that is designed to convert mechanical energy into useable electrical power. This component is critical in the function of the automotive electrical system because it is responsible for charging the battery using the converted electrical energy. Therefore, if the alternator fails, the performance and general operation of the vehicle will be compromised.

The alternator is built as a maintenance free module, and it can provide relatively long-term service without problems. However, when it fails completely, you will need to purchase an replacement. You can avoid the detriment of failure by performing repairs as soon as the component malfunctions. Here are the common signs and symptoms that indicate potential alternator failure.

Weak and Dead Battery

As mentioned above, the alternator is responsible for charging the auto battery when the engine is running. Therefore, one of the main symptoms of alternator malfunction is the failure of the battery. The battery is designed to act as the capacitor in the electrical system. In simple terms, this electrical storage module will be infused with electrical power which will be released when the engine is not active, including when starting the vehicle.

If the alternator is not working, the battery will have to provide energy to all the electrical components, including the air conditioner, radio and heater without recharging. Eventually, it will become weak or even die completely due to the discharge. If you notice declined battery performance, you should engage an auto technician to test the alternator for energy flow into the battery. They will also assess the integrity of the wiring and fuses and repair to restore function.

Dim Lights

When the engine of the vehicle is running, the alternator also acts as the direct source of power for electrical components. This design limits the unnecessary use of the battery, ensuring that the rate of wear is decelerated. You can assess the operation capacity of the alternator by checking the performance of electrical attachments, particularly the lighting. If the vehicle lights are dim or flickering, the alternator is not generating sufficient electrical energy to support the auto systems. You may also notice failure of the AC unit, device charging station and heaters.

Warning Lights

There are warning lights on the dashboard that are connected to the alternator through monitoring elements. If the alternator is performing poorly, the pertinent indicator light will light up. This sign is obvious, but the nature of displays can be confusing. Common warnings show ALT, GEN, Charge or a battery-shaped indicator lights.
